Swim Class Descriptions
Parent/Child (Baby and Me, Toddler and Me, Preschooler and Me): (Ages 6 months to about 3 years). Instructor works closely with parent in helping infant/toddler develop basic water skills, including: water adjustment, safety, and experiencing supported movement through the water. Parents/guardian must accompany each child participating into the water and participate in each class. Children must wear swimmer diapers.
Preschool Aquatics: Skills introduced include: water adjustment, breath control, underwater exploration, water safety, and swimming movements on front and back. An excellent class for children who have little or no previous water experience. Children should be emotionally ready to separate from parent. Parents are requested to watch class while sitting on the pool deck. Participants start at about 4 and 5 years old. Child’s first water experience without parent.
Swimming 1: (Ages 6+) This course is designed to orient participants to the aquatic environment. Instruction includes basic breath control, supported kicking on the front and back, familiarization with arm/leg action for front crawl, and safety skills. No experience is necessary.
Swimming 2: (Ages 6+) This class builds on the fundamental skills learned in Swim 1. Class focus is on unsupported front and back float and glide, combined stroke on front and back, and increased safety skills. Participants must have successfully completed Swimming 1.
Swimming 3: (Ages 6+) Aquatic skills learned in previous classes are continued. Coordination of front and back crawl, elementary backstroke, rotary breathing, treading water and basic rescue skills are taught. Swimming in deep water is introduced.
Swimming 4: (Ages 6+) Participants will become more independent and increase their endurance in the water by practicing and refining elementary backstroke, front and back crawl and breaststroke. Diving skills are also introduced.
Swimming 5: (Ages 6+) Participants refine and coordinate the key strokes learned in previous Swimming courses at increased distances. Front and back open turns are taught. Deep water work includes diving, water entries and treading.
Swimming 6: (Ages 6+) This class is often used to introduce some basic lifesaving skills (not a Lifeguarding class) to help the student be more aware of water safety. Learners at this level should be able to do all strokes successfully, and be able to switch between strokes on command. They should be able to dive effectively, and swim from one end of the pool to the other without stopping.
Adult: This class is designed for the beginner swimmer to the advanced. Abilities will be evaluated in the water by a certified instructor.
